Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population. The racial makeup of the town was 98.0% White, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. There were 401 housing units at an average density of 691.4 per square mile (267.0/km 2). The population density was 1,489.7 inhabitants per square mile (575.2/km 2). Demographics Historical populationĪs of the census of 2010, there were 864 people, 357 households, and 241 families living in the town. Īccording to the 2010 census, Van Buren has a total area of 0.58 square miles (1.50 km 2), all land. In June 1892 the town became incorporated by the state of Indiana. platted the area and it was known as Van Buren. As the area grew and developed it was called many names including Roods Corner, Roods Town, Roods Crossroads and Stringtown. Rood settled here and the creek that runs through the town was called Roods Run. Martin Van Buren was the United States president at the time. Joseph Boxell platted Van Buren Township in 1837. The population was 864 at the 2010 census. It’s also less than 10 minutes away from the SUNY Fredonia campus.Van Buren is a town in Van Buren Township, Grant County, Indiana, United States. It’s such an incredible place and I’m super excited to see what they have in store this spring. Being there almost feels like going back in time. This section will have fire pits where you can pull up a chair and watch your movie around the fire.Įven though it’s not yet in season, when I visited VBDI, I could feel the history in the air. ![]() They’re also working on a full-service campground where people can come hook up their RV’s. They are in the process of fixing up the original 1949 ticket booth and concession stand as well. The second screen is supposed to have an LED video wall system that will allow for movies to be shown during the day. Right now, there’s only one screen open in the same spot where it stood back in the day, but they are working on a second and third. Renovations are still being made she’s a work in progress. They plan to start back up sometime in April of 2022. The season lasted a couple months, until they decided it was too cold to continue. On October 1 st, 2021, they aired their first movie. After some major clean-up, they were back in business. ![]() In 2020, a local couple picked up the pieces (metaphorically and literally.) Dan and Gina Beckley purchased the drive-in and got to work. All that was left in the following years was a mess of overgrown forestry and vandalism. In 1991, they showed their final movie (or so people thought).įlash forward 20 years to 2011 – a tornado tore through the city destroying what was left of the abandoned theater. Unfortunately, over the years the popularity of drive-ins declined and VBDI suffered the consequences. With 850 spots spread across 15 acres of parking, it was one of the biggest of its time. A hidden gem and a local piece of history, Van Buren Drive-In, reopened this past season for the first time in thirty years.
